July 2021 News

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (July 24, 2021)

Greetings to our Members,

No Regular Meetings in July or August

Following our tradition, we will not be holding regular membership meetings during July and August.  We will resume our regular schedule of meetings on the 4th Thursday of the month, beginning on September 23rd.  Our Executive Board will be active during this summer as we have a busy agenda. Please check your email for a special event for club members, their families, and their guests in August.

Help STOP THE RECALL

The Republican effort to recall Governor Newsom, and put a Republican in the Governor’s mansion, will be held on Tuesday, September 14th. Clearly, we need to stop this Republican attempt to seize the Governor’s office and derail the Democratic agenda for the next year and a half. We must defeat the recall attempt at the polls. In the coming month, each California voter will receive a recall ballot in the mail.

There are two questions on the ballot.  The first question asks, shall the Governor be recalled?  Every Democratic voter, along with our nonpartisan voter allies, should vote No on recalling the Governor.  To do that, we need to get out the vote and encourage every Democrat to vote by mail when the recall ballot arrives in August. We need volunteers to make phone calls, send text messages, register voters, and walk precincts.  If you’re able, please sign up now at www.sddemocrats.org/recall.  Every little bit will help stop the recall.

The second question on the recall ballot will provide of a list of 43 candidates who have qualified to replace Governor Newsom, if he is recalled.  If a majority of voters vote “no” on the first question, the second question will not be counted.  But, if a majority of voters vote “yes” on the first question, whoever receives the most votes on the second question, whether or not that is a majority, will become the Governor until January 2023.  Please Vote No on the Recall, and mail in your ballot early, or drop it off at a community voting center between September 11 and 14.  You’ll be receiving more details on the voting procedure from the Secretary of State and our San Diego County Registrar of Voters.

September 23rd Club Elections

We are scheduled to have our Club officer elections at the September 23rd meeting.  The four offices to be filled are the President, Executive Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.   Anyone who is interested in serving any of these four offices can send an email to our Nominations Committee Chair, Marisa Hildebrand-Criqui, at torreypinesdems@gmail.com.  To qualify for these offices, you must be a registered Democrat and a paid-up member and have attended at least one regular meeting of the Club, except for the office of President which requires you to have attended at least three meetings of the Club. Include your reasons for seeking office.  Your name will be placed into nomination upon receiving a “second” at the meeting of September 23rd.  Nominations from the floor can also be made at the meeting.  All nominations will require a second.  All nominees will have opportunity to address attending Club members before the vote is taken. The vote will be by a secret ballot. For more information, go to our Club Bylaws at:  www.torreypinesdems.org/bylaws.

That’s it for now, I hope you’re all enjoying a wonderful summer, and I look forward to meeting you at our August 15th Social Event!
