Greetings Torrey Pines Dems-
We have a great program for our club meeting this month, featuring discussions with our County District 3 Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer and our State 78th District Assemblymember Chris Ward. Both are new in their roles, but both have already made impressive progress in effecting many positive changes for our community.
The achievements of Terra and our San Diego County Board of Supervisors have been remarkable this year, but the groundwork for this was laid over 10 years ago. In 2010, all of the members of the Board of Supervisors were Republican and, without term limits, there had been no new members in 15 years. Then, in June of 2010, a large majority of County voters passed Measure B, which thereafter limited Board members to serving two four-year terms. Change was slow as Republicans maintained a majority until November 2020, when Democrats won a majority of the Board seats for the first time ever. This year, the Board has been prolific in introducing new positive changes, and this progress is particularly impressive under the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic. Board Chair Nathan Fletcher has done an admirable job in leading the County’s COVID-19 response and recovery based on sound scientific guidance and a careful focus on equity. In addition to managing this monumental task, the Board has already compiled an impressive list of achievements for this year, benefiting environmental, social, and economic justice. Click here for a summary of these many accomplishments.
Assemblymember Chris Ward has also compiled an impressive list of achievements in his first few months of office after succeeding Todd Gloria (who, now as Mayor of San Diego, continues as another prolific agent of positive change). Chris’ accomplishments so far include introduction of new legislation to prohibit the sale and purchase of “ghost gun” kits at California gun shows, which is a cause championed by our fellow TPDC member Rose Ann Sharp, founder of Never Again CA.
I’m glad to have had the opportunity to meet these new leaders when they were candidates visiting our previous club meetings. I’m sure that you, like me, find it gratifying that these leaders that we’ve supported have been so intensely focused on achieving our shared Democratic values.

Interim Executive Vice President
Want to Join the Executive Board?
To help us continue to improve our services to our members, the Executive Board has approved the addition of two new seats on the Board, and to fix one ex-officio seat for our immediate past president. The two added seats will be filled with appointments of interested regular members. We want to be sure that we are representing your interests and values when making leadership decisions. If you are interested in serving on the Executive Board, please send an email, along with a brief statement about your interests and experience to torreypinesdems@gmail.com. All responses will be considered by the Board and two members will be selected to join for two-year terms. Your participation will further strengthen our Club programs and mission.
Club Officers Election Coming Up Soon
Election of Club Officers will be coming up in September. There are four elected officers: President, Executive Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. All four offices are now up for election. The President and Secretary will be elected for an initial term of one year, with two-year terms thereafter. The Executive Vice-President and Treasurer will be elected for two-year terms. All officers would be subject to three consecutive terms in office.
A nominations committee is being formed, with Marisa Hildebrand-Criqui as chair. The Committee will open up nominations to all regular members, and after reviewing the nominations a slate of recommended candidates will be presented for election. Nominations from the floor will also be accepted. If you are interested in standing for election to one of the four offices, or you know another member you think would be a good candidate, be sure to send in your nomination to torreypinesdems@gmail.com.

Subject: Draft Club Resolutions for Your Consideration
Dear Members,
At the May 18th Central Committee Meeting of the San Diego County Democratic Party, two resolutions were submitted and approved unanimously. These resolutions, one urging the City Council of San Diego other elected leaders to speed adopt measure to require speedier processing of evidence in the backlog of rape kits and the prosecution of suspects, the other urging the California State Legislature to study the costs and benefits of establishing a Citizens’ Initiative Review process on State ballot measures similar to the program enacted ten years ago in Oregon.
I was impressed by the public benefits to be gained by the consideration and enactment of both of these citizen based resolutions, now adopted by our County Party Central Committee. I thought you might also like to hear more about these programs and would like to have the opportunity to join in support of both measures. The draft resolutions are linked in the agenda above.
These will be the first resolutions to be considered under our recently amended Bylaws, allowing resolutions expressing the will or sentiments of Club members to be adopted upon a simple majority vote of members present and voting, provided that we have a sufficient quorum of members present.
I will be providing more information about the programs that are the subject of these resolution, and will attempt to have proponents speak to us about them at the meeting. You may, of course, do your own “due diligence.”
