Torrey Pines Democratic Club

Newsletter January 2021

Hello Torrey Pines Dems and Friends,

I hope you and your family are in good health this new year. The holidays were different for many of us and hopefully you were able to enjoy time with family and friends.

Much to my chagrin, this week has been another attack on our democracy with the terrorist attack on our Capital (and seemingly supported by the Capital police). Not only is it an attack on our democracy but it further validates the differences of how law enforcement handled  this “peaceful” protest compared to the BLM protests. It’s quite overwhelming and I truly hope that those responsible such as the current President are held responsible.

This past year many of us worked hard to elect Democratic candidates at the federal, state and local level. The work continued in December as many of us supported the GA election.

I’d like to point out some of our 2020 accomplishments of our club:

  • We continued to hold successful meetings via Zoom video conferencing.
  • Jim Smith led two endorsement meetings remotely; employing canvassing tools provided by the San Diego County Democratic Party.
  • Provided a platform throughout the year for direct interaction between our members and many of the local candidates running for political office, either during our in-person meetings early in the year or via Zoom meetings thereafter.
  • Provided detailed explanation and clarity on propositions and measures on the ballot, analyzing the pros and cons, seeking members input, and helping our membership with making an informed and intelligent decision when voting.
  • Our membership totaled 69 members.

We have lots in the planning for 2021:

  • Elections of new club officers. If you’re interested in running for office, please contact Wayne Dernetz.
  • We have a sub committee to review and updated our club bylaws. We are also looking into a new bylaws to remove members for cause.
  • Programming focused on racial justice specific to the city of Del Mar.
  • Recording of membership meetings for on demand access.
  • Restructuring of our E-Board.

Thanks for your support,
Diana

It is Time for our Club Membership Renewal Drive

We hope that you will consider renewing and supporting our continuing efforts to provide a forum for Democrats. There are several categories of membership as outlined on our website Membership page. Why join? We have done a lot in one year and have a lot more to do. Your membership provides the financial support to make these things possible.

COVID-19 Vaccination Experience

TPDC Club Member Dr. Pratima Gupta was volunteering at the Petco Park Vaccination Superstation when who should drive up but our fellow members Wayne and Liz Dernetz! Wayne shares this experience:

Friends,

Liz and I just received our Covid-19 vaccine #1 at Petco Park. It went very smoothly and efficiently.  Less than 45 minutes to get through the line, plus the driving time to/from.  Very well organized.

Due to slow signups for the vaccine in the 1A stage, County Health has decided to open up to 75+ year olds.  UCSD Health is operating a mass vaccine center, by reservation, at Petco Park.  UCSD Health will offer to 65+ at least until the number of vaccinations administered increases.  This is the Moderna vaccine.  95% effective.

Go to this Link at the County of San Diego website:
https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/phs/community_epidemiology/dc/2019-nCoV/vaccines/vax-schedule-appointment.html

Once there, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the blue button (View Available Times).

That will take you to the UCSD Health website, also known as “My Chart” where you can reserve a time slot.  You’ll have to fill out some information, just follow the directions.  If you have a UCSD MRN (medical record number) sign in as a member.  If not, sign in as a guest.

Good luck.  Life is uncertain, eat dessert first!  And don’t wait for your vaccine.

Wayne Dernetz
