Mosier is professor emeritus in the Department of Immunology & Microbial Science at the Scripps Research Institute, having recently retired after four decades of HIV-1/AIDS research.

Mosier brings with him a long history of community service, including being Mayor of Del Mar 2010–2011, a two-term City Council member and a member of the Design Review Board.  He serves on Congressman Mike Levin’s San Onofre Task Force.

Wayne Dernetz, Del Mar Go Team Lead, will be leading a discussion centered around the Supreme Court denying the opportunity to revisit the 1971 decision on Qualified Immunity for police.  If anything’s to be done, it’s up to Congress.

TELL YOUR STATE SENATOR: VOTE YES ON ACA 5

A message from our friends at the League of Women Voters of California.
ACA 5: Stand For Equal Opportunity, Level the Playing Field

Harms equal opportunity for women and minorities.” — That was the ballot argument the League of Women Voters of California submitted to oppose Prop 209 in 1996. And we were right. Since its passage, Prop 209 has caused steep disinvestment in the education, employment, and equality of women and people of color. ACA 5 can change this – Act now to support the restoration of equal opportunity programs.

The Black Lives Matter demonstrations over the last several weeks have shown us how discrimination and inequity are still deeply ingrained in our institutions. Affirmative action is an important tool to help empower people of color and women in arenas where they have been historically underrepresented. Act now and tell your state senator to level the playing field and make our schools and workforce more diverse.

We stand with Black Lives Matter. We stand for racial justice. We stand for police accountability.

“I can’t breathe.” With these words, George Floyd died on May 25th of asphyxiation beneath the knee of a Minneapolis police officer, as other officers looked on. Floyd was unarmed and handcuffed. He was suspected of passing a $20 counterfeit bill. His is the latest in a long list of unarmed black men and women who have died at the hands of police. In 2014 Eric Gardner, also handcuffed and pinned to the ground, uttered his final words, “I can’t breathe,” as a New York City police officer sat on his head. These killings were captured on video by onlookers. There is no question about the circumstances, or the brutality of the killings. We stand with Black Lives Matter. We stand for racial justice. We stand for police accountability.

Between Eric Gardner’s death in July 2014 and that of George Floyd, more than 100 other unarmed black men, women and children have died at the hands of police. Published data show that police killing of black men and women is proportionally more than 2.5 times greater than that of white people. Homicides and other violent crimes in major cities across the nation have been in decline over the past few decades. But the annual rate of police killings remains constant.

To our national disgrace, violence against black Americans is not new – it extends back to the time of slavery and the subsequent era of Jim Crow laws in the South. Today, however, the ubiquitous presence of smart phones has brought videos of these all-too-frequent crimes into our living rooms. We Americans can no longer ignore the brutality and injustice of racial animus in the police force – and in our nation. We must stand up against any unwarranted police violence and demand equal justice. Until that happens, “we all can’t breathe.”

Wayne Dernetz, Del Mar

June 5th would have been Breonna Taylor’s 27th birthday. Let’s take action to demand justice for her.

In honor of Breonna Taylor’s birthday, here are some concrete action items you can do to commemorate her life and fight to get her justice. Complete as many items on the list as you can and share the link to this campaign so that other people can complete it too.

Here’s the registration link:  https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAsd-6trDsqEtLG6fIro41K9N0nvfMwb_Dp. – DON”T WAIT TO REGISTER UNTIL THE LAST MOMENT – DO IT NOW AND THEN YOU WILL BE SURE TO GET A REMINDER TO ZOOM IN and not have to go looking for this email!!!!

ALSO Mike is  encouraging supporters to email photos of themselves with Mike Levin campaign signs, shirts, buttons, etc., for a photo collage. You can do this at any time…..angle your face so the “hair roots” don’t show and Mike’s campaign button/sign does!   Send them to: Hunter@mikelevin.org.  If you have any questions, send them to Hunter.

Mike asks so little of us and he has been with us and done more than we asked.  Now it’s our turn.  Please zoom in on Saturday and send your selfie to Hunter with an emblem of support for Mike beforehand.  I bet there will be an award for the most creative selfie!
