Veterans Village of San Diego Drive-Thru Clothing Drive, Friday June 10th

For many years, Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins has co-sponsored a socks and underwear drive for the annual Veterans Village of San Diego Stand Down.

This year and last year, due to COVID protocols, the clothing drive is a one-day drive-in event.

The clothing drive will be on Friday, June 10th from 7am to 3pm. Community members can drop off donations at the drive thru in the VVSD employee parking lot at 4141 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92110.The most requested clothing items are new or gently used shoes and tennis shoes, t-shirts, sweatpants, outerwear, sweatshirts, hoodies, jeans, XXL items. New socks and underwear for men and women are also in high demand.

Donated clothing will be distributed at VVSD’s Stand Down July 29th-31st. Stand Down’s annual 3-day event for veterans and their families experiencing homelessness or at risk for experiencing homelessness is returning after a two year break due to Covid-19. Services offered will include three meals per day, clothing, hygiene items, haircuts, legal support, employment support, medical services, and more. VVSD is prepared to serve over 700 of our most vulnerable residents at Stand Down.

San Diego county is estimated to have over 8,000 homeless veterans. VVSD has served the veteran community since 1981 offering transitional and permanent housing, mental health counseling, substance use treatment, and employment and training services. Veteran Stand Down events have been recognized as the “most valuable outreach tool for homeless veterans” by the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans
