October Meeting Recap

Statements:

The floor was opened to elected officials, candidates, and speakers on propositions not on the Agenda.

Kristi Becker, the Club’s Vice President of Endorsements and a candidate for the Solana Beach City Council, spoke and thanked everyone for their support.

Jessica Hayes, Chairwoman of the San Diego Democratic Party, brought North County Democratic Voter Guide door-hangers for distribution and said that the recommended judicial candidates were listed at www.sddemocrats.org/judges.

Dwight Worden, Mayor of Del Mar and up for reelection, urged everyone to help get out the vote and to support Mike Levin, who he said would be a refreshing change for the district.

Program, Part 1:

Mike Levin, U.S. Congressional District 49 Candidate. Mike Levin said that there was still critically important work to be done in the next 12 days and that more people were needed to make calls, knock on doors, and contact as many people as possible to encourage them to vote. He said it was especially important to talk to young people, pointing out that 31 million between the ages of 18 and 35 had the opportunity to vote in the last election but chose not to, when they could have easily swung the election. He invited everyone to join him at the Del Mar Hilton for the Election Night watch party. He also said if elected, he wanted to have monthly town hall meetings, in part because of the country’s dire need to get back to civil discourse; he wanted to listen and hopefully turn the temperature down a bit.

Program, Part 2:

The Pros & Cons of the November Ballot Initiatives. Connie Urlich and Karen Vanderwerken, from the League of Women Voters, gave a detailed review of the statewide propositions on the November ballot. They distributed the LWV’s Easy Voter Guide, which can also be found at www.easyvoterguide.org. They provided tips on how to evaluate a proposition, such as deciding if the issue was too complex for a “yes” or “no” answer, if it was a solution to a problem or would create new problems, and if it would restrict the state budget. Also, it was important to find out who was really supporting or opposing it and to be aware that everything said about a proposition was an advertisement, with the exception of the California Legislative Analyst’s Office (LOA) statements. The entire text of a proposition can be found at www.voterguide.sos.ca.gov.

Treasurer’s Report:

Phil Currier reported that the Club’s bank balance was $1705.07 and said that there should be about $950 – $1,000 left at the end of the year, after the upcoming fees and expenses were paid. He also noted that the Club has been borrowing a projector to use at meetings and suggested that the Club consider buying one.

We will not have a monthly meeting in November.

Nicaragua: Revolution and Restoration presented by the San Diego World Affairs Council

Since his election in 2007, Daniel Ortega has gradually restored autocratic rule to Nicaragua.  This April, a student rebellion quickly gained the support of much of civil society and organized business.  Ortega’s security forces responded by shooting hundreds of protestors. The international community reacted with outrage, but so far Ortega stands tough even as the economy spirals downward.  Prof. Feinberg, who recently visited the country, will address the question: What can be done to avoid a deepening tragedy for the long-suffering Nicaraguan people?

About The  Speaker

Richard Feinberg is a professor of international political economy at UCSD’s School of Global Policy & Strategy (GPS). Dr. Feinberg has enjoyed a distinguished career as diplomat, policy advisor, corporate consultant, university professor and author of over 200 books and articles on international relations. His four decades of engagement with United States foreign policy spans government services — in the White House, Department of State and Department of the Treasury — numerous Washington-based public policy institutes, the Peace Corps in Chile and, now, academia.

Feinberg is an authority on U.S. foreign policy, multilateral institutions (IMF, World Bank, NAFTA) and summitry (APEC, Summitry in the Americas, G-8). He is an expert on trade and investment, globalization, democratization and non-governmental organizations.

Feinberg is a currently non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. He holds a Ph.D. in International Economics from Stanford University and a B.A. in European History from Brown University.

ADEM ELECTIONS 2019

The Assembly District Election Meetings (ADEMs) are held every two years (Saturday, January 12 or Sunday, January 13 and Saturday, January 26 or Sunday, January 27 of 2019) to elect 7 women and 7 men to be Assembly District Delegates (ADDs) to represent the Assembly District they are registered as a Democrat in.

AD Delegates to the Democratic State Central Committee (DSCC) are responsible for planning and attending informational meetings throughout the region and working with other DSCC delegates throughout California to represent their community.

AD Delegates are elected by voters (to participate in the ADEM you MUST be a registered Democrat in that Assembly District).

AD Delegates vote on behalf of the community they represent at CDP Regional Meetings, the California Democratic Party Convention, and those who are also elected to serve as an Executive Board member are responsible for voting and representing their community at the semi-annual E-Board meetings.

Learn more about delegate selection on the CA Dem website. Includes an informative video on how the process works.
