Torrey Pines Democratic Club

Newsletter November-December 2020

Hello Torrey Pines Dems and Friends,

Congratulations and Thanks!

Congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as well as all the state and local Democratic candidates who won in this month’s election. Thank you to all the volunteers, donors, and campaign staff who helped make all of this happen. We are also grateful to all the Democratic candidates and advocates that have participated in our club meetings, allowing us to be more engaged in this political process and helping us foster democratic values together.

Flip the Senate Blue

Two runoff elections in Georgia this January will determine the U.S. Senate majority as well as President-elect Biden’s authority to enact a Democratic agenda. Current standings for the Senate show 46 Democrats, 2 Independents who caucus with Democrats, and 50 Republicans. If Georgia Democratic candidates Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock BOTH win, there will be a Democratic majority in the Senate because Vice President-elect Harris will be the tie breaker in the case of 50-50 votes. We are planning to phone bank on behalf of these candidates one day (TBD) during the first week in December. Please contact Diana if you are interested in participating, and please consider donating to these candidates for this critical election that will have huge implications for national policy.

Welcome New E-Board Members

Please welcome three new voting members to our E-Board. Dr. Pratima Gupta, member of the San Diego Democratic Party Central Committee, is now our club’s Liaison with the Central Committee. Ken Burtt, who has been maintaining our club’s website, is now our club’s Communication Director and will also be responsible for the club’s newsletter, social media, and other media communications. Marisa HildebrandCriqui is our new Program Director, responsible for coordinating and scheduling speakers for our monthly club meetings. Marisa is taking over this role from Roya Golchoobian, who has taken on other new service roles in our community. We warmly thank Roya for her years of service to our club, arranging for so many great speakers to participate in our club meetings.

Our E-board is working on some changes for the new year. We have been working on setting goals for 2021, setting up the programming for our meetings, and re-organization. Stay tuned for changes coming in 2021.  Please email us at torreypinesdems@gmail.com if you have recommendations for 2021 programming.

Get Involved with SANDAG Regional Planning

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is currently developing the 2021 Regional Plan and is actively soliciting community input to provide a new vision for our region through 2050. It is a broad-based community effort that addresses many important issues, including using land more wisely, building a more efficient and accessible transportation system, protecting the environment, improving public health, promoting a strong regional economy, better managing our access to energy, incorporating equity into the planning process, addressing pressing needs on tribal lands, and supporting a vibrant international border. Community input is critical to creating a Regional Plan that reflects the varied values, needs, and interests of the San Diego region’s residents and businesses.
