Next week is September and that means we are 4 weeks from our September monthly meeting.

Our meeting on Thursday, September 26th, will be held at the Cardiff Public Library. The social starts at 6 p.m. and the meeting program runs from 6:30 p.m – 8 p.m.

Growing Up Homeless in America
Michael Gaulden

We are honored to host Michael Gaulden as one of our speakers. He is an active homeless activist and motivational public speaker. Michael will speak of his own experience with being homeless in San Diego. He will also have copies of his book available for purchase.

Michael Gaulden received his Bachelors of Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a former qualitative and quantitative researcher for UCLA’s Black Male Institute, a research institution whose goal is to conduct reliable research, practical interventions, and effective programs that enrich the educational experiences and life chances of minority males in the United States. Mr. Gaulden is the former Director of Business and Community Relations for Reality Changers, a college prep organization with a focus on building first generation college students. He is experienced in business development, communications, and community relations. He is currently the Career Exploration Coordinator and Internship Coordinator for the Monarch School Project. Monarch is the only operational school in the United States that exclusively educates K-12 students who are impacted by homelessness. Michael also attended the school in his youth. He is an active Homeless activist, education enthusiast, musician as well as an activist for all disadvantaged people. As a motivational public speaker, he has spoken to audiences ranging from 20-2000. He is a Spoken Word artist and advocate for the arts. He recently started a video project entitled “Homelessness Through the Eyes of Michael Gaulden” in order to shift the negative perception and connotation around homelessness and the people it impacts. As an author, Mr. Gaulden is the debut author of “My Way Home” a memoir that chronicles growing up homeless for ten years in the inner-city.

San Diego Citizen FBI Academy
Sheri Sachs

Sheri J. Sachs has a proven track record of advocating for causes and issues throughout Southern California. She currently serves on many non-profit boards and commissions including: the FBI San Diego Citizens Academy Alumni Association, Carlsbad Community Foundation, Carlsbad Senior Commission, and the Rancho Santa Fe Democratic Club. Sheri was also honored to serve her Jewish community as president of Temple Solel, one of the largest synagogues in San Diego County. Ms. Sachs is a state delegate for the California Democratic Party, and serves as an elected member of the San Diego Democratic Central Committee.

Sheri had an impactful career in the non-profit industry as an executive director of Conner’s Cause for Children and The Mark Victor Hanson Foundation (co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul), and a development consultant for the Anthony Robbins Foundation. Ms. Sachs currently serves seniors with their healthcare needs as CEO of Encinitas Internal Medicine. Sheri has a B.S. degree in Psychology from The City University of New York and a Master’s in Government from Harvard University in 2019. Her service awards include: Channel 10-Leadership Award, United Way-Community Hero Volunteer Award, Microsoft and Points of Light Foundation-National Non-Profit Marketing Award.

The FBI San Diego Citizens Academy Alumni Association’s Speakers Bureau informs the public about the mission, priorities, and organization of the FBISDCAAA and the history of the FBI. Sheri is not a FBI agents, but a civilians who graduated from the FBI Citizens Academy and has been exposed, in detail, to the workings of the FBI, both at the San Diego Field office, as well as at the FBI Academy in Quantico, and FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Through Sheri’s presentation, her goal will be to enhance awareness of the Bureau’s activities, dispel any misperceptions, and encourage the community to assist the FBI in its mission of protecting our communities and nation.

Two important topics on the agenda for the SB City Council meeting tomorrow.

  1. Safe Storage Ordinance
  2. Disposable Plastic Ban

Email a comment in support of the Council moving forward with strict prohibitions on the single use plastic products and supporting the safe storage ordinance. Send to Amy Uruburu   auruburu@cosb.org, AND/OR attend the meeting, and if you wish to speak fill out a speaker slip in the back of Council Chambers this Wednesday at 6pm. (Address: 635 Hwy 101, Solana Beach, CA )

Club Business

E-Board

Our E-Board met last night. We are looking for a meeting venue for 2020. We are hoping we can make the location of the school in Del Mar work in 2020. This would mean looking at a different day to meet and we are proposing meeting the fourth Wednesdays of the month same time frame of 6-8 p.m. Stay tuned.

Club Finances –  Financially our club is doing great. Thanks to everyone’s membership dues and additional donations. We would like to receive input from our members of other organizations we can support such as youth groups, immigrant groups, etc. We believe it’s important to support others in our community. If you have any suggestions please email Diana.

Del Mar Go Team

Wayne Dernetz, Del Mar Go Team Lead, is hosting a Del Mar Go Team meeting on Saturday, September 28th. This is an event for renewal of volunteers’ commitments and new volunteer sign-ups for the upcoming 2020 campaigns. Email Wayne for more information.
